Dean will always be with Sam.
“I love you so much. My baby brother.”
“I need you to promise me that it’s okay.” / “Dean— it’s okay. You can go now.”
Their hands. Their foreheads.
“Goodbye, Sam.” / “Goodbye.”
Dean’s last breath followed right by Sam’s audible, gasping breath.

He had to die that way.
If he died in some spectacular way, it would have felt unfinished. Like, he needed to come back to finish the job. But he died in a normal hunter way. And that was necessary.
He can go toe-to-toe with the devil himself, but he’s still a human. He had to die in a human way. It wouldn’t be right or true to his character to die any other way.
And he had to go out fighting. He would never just peacefully hang it up and live a quiet life. Sam, he could always do that. That was always a possibility, but Dean, he couldn’t do that and he wouldn’t have wanted to. It wouldn’t have felt right.
And another thing, everyone upset about how few characters were actually in the finale, that was important. It started with Sam and Dean, it had to end with Sam and Dean.
Truth. Full circle. Dean goes out saving people, hunting things. He always said he wanted to die on a hunt. And Sam finally got normal. Also what Dean wanted for him.
